The company responsible for developing Fornite:Battle Royale, Epic Games, has announced that the game will soon be updated to support 'cross-play, cross-progression, and cross-purchase' between the different PC, Mac, Xbox One and iOS versions. Moreover, support for the Android version will be added 'in the next few months,' too.
'Contrary to what may have been implied, Microsoft has long been a leading voice in supporting cross-platform play, connecting players across PC, mobile and all consoles,' to quote the official post on the Epic Games website. 'We've been working together with them over the last several months to make this possible and will bring this functionality to Fortnite players on Xbox right along with other platforms.'
It continues as follows: 'With each new platform we support and every update we ship, we strive to bring Fortnite to more people, and make it easier to play together with friends. And, as always, cross-play is opt in.'
The game has been available on PC & Xbox One for quite some time already, but the mobile versions are the new thing; they were announced on March 10th. According to Epic Games, Fortnite for Android/iOS is 'the same 100-player game you know from Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC, and Mac' with the 'same gameplay, same map, same content, same weekly updates.'
Even though the Xbox One and PS4 versions of Fortnite can not connect yet, it is actually possible for a fact. In the past, it had happened for an entire weekend, however Epic Games turned that 'feature' off and claimed it was an unwanted bug in the game.
There has been previous confirmation that, with the help of Sony's partnership, Fornite is going to support crossplay and cross-progression between PC, Mac, PS4, iOS and Android. Sign-ups for the mobile versions of Fortnite will start on March 12th and in the next few months there is only going to be an invite-only test on these two platforms.
Those who are lucky will receive their invite by e-mail a short time after their sign-up. More and more invites will be sent out as time passes, so don't fret if you don't get one straight away, there will be many chances! If you do happen to get an invite, you will alse be given some additional codes so you can play with your friends.
PlayerUnknown's BattleGrounds, the inspiration for Fortnite:Battle Royale, happens to have a mobile edition, too! However, that is only true in China and it does not and will not support cross-play. Unlike Fortnite, PUBG is not available on the PlayStation 4, which might be one of the reasons Sony chose to partner with Epic Games.
Fortnite has been rather steadily catching up with PUBG as of late in terms of popularity, which might be an issue for PlayerUnknown's game.
Will you sign up for the mobile test of Fortnite? Which platform will you use more to play the game? Tell us in the comment section! As always, stay tuned for more information on Fortnite, PUBG, and anything gaming related!
